Oh, how much has been writting about this, and from far more learned people than me, but I thought that I’d take a stab at it because it’s been on my mind and in my heart.
Just what does it mean to be created in the image and likeness of God? Well, theologians tell us that unlike animals, we have a soul (hmmmm…not so sure about that one), we can reason, have free will, etc.
We certainly don’t know what God looks like, especially since we believe that he is pure Spirit, so that’s not it.
The word that keeps popping into my head is ‘potential’. Our potential, (God’s fullness).
We can love…if we are created in the image and likeness of God then does it mean that we can love unconditionally?
We can forgive…if we are created in the image and likeness of God then does it mean that we can say the words, “Father forgive them (him, her) because they know not what they do?”
We can serve….if we are created in the image and likeness of God then can we wash one another’s feet?
The image and likeness of God – our potential….
Ah, thank you for these thoughts, Andie. If we are in the image and likeness of Godde, we can love, forgive, serve… Yes, beautiful!
Until now, I had always felt that by being in the image and likeness of Godde, it meant that every human being on earth is indeed in the image and likeness of Godde, and as such infinitely lovable. I guess I saw Godde in the other rather than Godde in me and all that it could mean…
So now, I can go and work in my garden pondering on all this.
Thank you!
Wow Andie – deep stuff. I like it – quite a bit. To have His image as our potential – very powerful.
I always liked to think that being made in His image was about our souls as well – our free will, the compassion we all have within us, the empathy we can tap into if we only try. The purity of the love we can feel.
